Frequently Asked Questions
Is solar water heating a viable alternative to gas or electricity?
Solar should be seen as a supplement. While it cannot totally replace gas or electric heating on low-sunlight days, a correctly sized system can provide 60%-70% of a household's annual hot water needs.
How long will it take to recoup my investment?
In a normal household spending 25% of its electricity bill on water heating, the full cost may be recouped as quickly as 4-5 years through reduced energy bills.
Can these solar collectors be used in cold conditions?
Yes. Collectors can be used in temperatures as low as -30°C, although performance is reduced in extreme cold. Excellent output is still achieved in mild sub-zero conditions.
Will water be heated on a cloudy day?
Yes. Although output is reduced on overcast days, it still provides heating. Automated systems ensure you have hot water regardless of weather via electric or gas boosting when needed.
Can I use a solar collector with my existing hot water system?
Normally yes. Retrofit valves allow connection to existing cold water inlets, or an additional storage tank can be installed to pre-heat water before it enters your existing unit.
Is the solar collector a fire hazard during hot, dry weather?
No. Components are high-temperature rated and non-flammable (stainless steel, aluminium, glass). Systems include a temperature relief valve to prevent exceeding 99°C / 212°F.
